But it seems like it would be an invaluable reference to the developing artist who is studying the art of tattoo. The flash is all crisply classic in its execution, and would fit right in with any tattoo artist's reference library.<br /> <br /> Wolfgang Publications has a whole series of books that fit this category geared more to the mechanical side of tattooing. This volume fits in nicely to that genre and is a excellent snapshot of the sketch portfolio of the "classic" tattoo artist.

Not that I don’t appreciate a fine work of  body art that is beautiful for beauty’s sake. I just find myself more intellectually stimulated by tattoos that pack a narrative punch. Chapters are divided up by category (Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, Earth Sciences, etc.) with photos of the contributors work, along with a paragraph or two devoted to explaining the accompanying pieces. These are not tattoos that resulted from walking in to a shop and picking flash off the wall. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Rather, we’re treated to tattoos that were clearly thought out and executed with the purpose of connecting to the individuals passion for their intellectual stimuli.</span><br /> <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"> </span><br /> <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"> </span><br /> <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Tattoo purists may look at this book and cringe at the quality of some of the tattoos depicted. But the quality is not the point, and there is a lot of fine work, nonetheless. With a few exceptions, we are not seeing work contributed by tattoo aficionados. Instead, we get a glimpse of tattoos from people that you don’t normally associate with ink: scientists, doctors, university professors, and anthropologists. For that reason, Science Ink succeeds in drawing in the reader to the individual narrative behind the tattoo. What makes someone who is uninked take the leap and go under the needle?</span><br /> <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"> </span><br /> <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Ultimately, it is the answer to that question that propels the mini-narratives forward and make Science Ink such a compelling read. Above and beyond the appreciation of tattoos, the book speaks to a larger audience, those who are steeped in the sciences and those who don’t consider themselves part of a “tattoo culture”. Ultimately, not everyone who is science-minded gets a tattoo related to their field, but a mathematician may understand someone’s desire to get an interesting equation inked on their forearm more than they would, say, getting a flaming skull or a scattering of cherry blossoms.</span><br /> <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"> </span><br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgeb6Pgp9ocEufh6sCod8o_ib3ALJnZLyTicd7dPPBkwxz0zhsjI0KJFvZmjAkjG7RGMyZCwT2BPirokOPzwyuXJPKPBUXpyVPihcNZpicDRccPm7WbYqocXVzgAAq1qCiP2N64MKLsgU/s1600/scienceink.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a></div><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">The biggest fault I find with <u>Science Ink</u> is not an original one. Marisa over at Needles and Sins voiced the disappointment in her review, as well, that the artists who created the body art are rarely named by the contributors. I always ask Tattoosday contributors to disclose their artists’ names to give credit where credit is due. Occasionally I  meet people who do not recall the names of their artists, but that tends to be a smaller percentage. Zimmer includes a thumbnail “visual index” of contributors. It would be nice, if there is ever a Science Ink II, to include an index of artists, as well. As a saving grace, Zimmer does credit the artists on his website here, but I only discovered that by accident.** I’d imagine, however, that to the bulk of the reading audience, the tattooist’s identity  is not as important and may seem extraneous, but for many it is nice to see credit where credit is due.</span><br /> <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"> </span><br /> <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">All in all, however, Zimmer hits the ball out of the park with a wonderful tattoo-themed product that I fully endorse and recommend.</span><br /> <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"> </span><br /> <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">With the holidays just around the corner, this would make a great gift for the science obsessed person in your life!</span><br /> <br /> **After this posted, Carl Zimmer e-mailed me: <br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq">"Thanks! The concept is simple: each subject stands in a full shot at the beginning of their section. There is a paragraph or two composed by the host, describing, in various degrees of detail, their tattoo journeys. Its a fine line of art that McNaughton executes brillianty. Especially remarkable are the subjects who appear mostly, if not fully, covered. A turn of the page strips layers off of the individuals and we are treated to the artistic treasures that lie beneath. It dazzles the imagination, the unveiling of a person who appears uninked, only to reveal a breath-taking display of coverage that illuminates that this person spent hours upon hours under the needle.<br /> <br /> It is brilliantly executed and I recommend it fully, all 304 pages with 700 color illustrations. Alex MacNaughton is also the author of London Street Art, London Street Art 2 and London Street Art Anthology. I encourage Tattoosday readers to buy London Tattoos - the holidays are just around the corner - and, at the very least, visit MacNaughton's website here to get a bigger taste of the work inside this wonderful book.

All that being said, skeptics might argue that there was a snowball’s chance in hell that, here on Tattoosday, you’d see a negative review of this, the fourth installment in the Tattoo Shop Mystery series. <br /><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Fortunately for me, I have no moral dilemma, as <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Ink-Flamingos-Tattoo-Shop-Mystery/dp/0451233794?ie=UTF8&tag=bill03-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" target="_blank">Ink Flamingos</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=bill03-20&l=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969&o=1&a=0451233794" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important;" width="1" /> is, like its predecessors, a great read. All bloggy plot points aside, I can whole-heartedly recommend not just the book, but all four volumes. They are consistently fun, humorous, exciting and, quite importantly, respectful to the tattoo industry and the good people therein.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Before I continue, however, I’ll point you to my previous reviews of  <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2010/09/tattoosday-book-review-driven-to-ink.html">Driven to Ink</a>, <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2010/03/tattoosday-book-review-pretty-in-ink.html">Pretty in Ink</a>, and <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2009/11/tattoosday-book-review-missing-ink.html">The Missing Ink</a> for the whole suite of opinions on Ms. Olson’s tattoo-themed work. Click on the titles to be transported back in time to my reviews.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">As flattering as it was to learn that I helped, in part, inspire the blogging aspect of this latest volume in the series, I took pause when I learned that the blogger was <u>not</u> a benign presence in the novel. Fortunately, Olson’s easy-going narrative style, transported me past my initial misgivings, and into the brisk current of the story.  </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Despite the presence of the blogger, the real meat of the mystery derives from the dead rock singer, who appears to have been the victim of a an allergic reaction to some color ink, and a doppelganger/impersonator of our heroine, tattooist Brett Cavanaugh, that shines the spotlight on her as a suspect, at least in the eyes of some.<br /><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">The whole cast of characters is back, as we watch Brett go very easily from being determined to not getting involved to rapid ascension into the thick of police matters. We get a little less Bitsy and Dr. Bixby, and a little more Joel this time around. But fans of Brett Cavanaugh's stormy love-him-or-hate-him relationship with her peer, Murder Ink's Jeff Coleman, will not be disappointed.<br /><br />And, as always, the city of Las Vegas plays an important part, as well. With Brett Cavanaugh's shop being based in an upscale casino, the character of the city in the dessert is omnipresent.<br /><br />Karen Olson continues to develop her characters and feature the art of tattooing at the forefront of her plot lines which, for me, is always entertaining. It's always a pleasure to join her as she unravels some mess, and I encourage Tattoosday readers to check out her shop in the pages of Karen E. Olson's books. Divided up into five sections, titled "The Family," "The Business," "The Art," "The Work," and "The Patrons," this is not just about Coppoletta and his own work. The reader is also introduced to the whole family: Kanae, Mie Satou, Dominique Holmes, Diego Brandini, and Diego Azaldegui.<br /><br />Some may draw comparisons to the books the American tattoo artist Kat Von D, which I have favorably reviewed in the past on this site. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Tattooed-Family-Business-Chris-Terry/dp/1862058830">Tattooed by the Family Business</a> is in a different league. It is as you would expect, Von D's books are busy and filled with words and images; whereas Coppoletta's book exudes a classiness to which other artists can only aspire.<br /><br />In fact, an online review hardly does it justice. Photography dominates and, whereas the tattoo, or the process of tattooing is always at hand, the beauty of the book also lies in its images. Ultimately, I believe, it's what most serious artists want to see in a tattoo book. The reader is treated to the full-page two-dimension image from which the artist drew his inspiration, and then can compare it to the end result.<br /><br />Here on Tattoosday, where most of the tattoos we see are from New York-based artists, I have, in several years, only had the pleasure of encountering Coppoletta's work once, documented <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2009/10/gypsy-roses-and-tombstone.html">here</a>. Therefore, getting to see a more expansive look at his work, as well as that of other artists in The Family Business, is a real pleasure.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Tattooed-Family-Business-Chris-Terry/dp/1862058830">Tattooed by the Family Business</a> is a veritable feast. I keep returning to it, marveling at the craftsmanship and beauty of the tattoos. I highly recommend it to artists and aficionados alike. But I quickly got over the inkblogger envy and waited with anticipation to see how this would turn out.<br /><div id=":159"><br />The answer: pretty darn good.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Word-Made-Flesh-Bookworms-Worldwide/dp/0061997404?ie=UTF8&tag=bill03-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" target="_blank">The Word Made Flesh</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=bill03-20&l=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969&o=1&a=0061997404" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important; padding: 0px ! important;" width="1" />, as the subtitle describes, juxtaposes photos of tattoos of a literary flavor, with blurbs from the contributors. There is poetry and prose, as well as more symbolic imagery to represent specific themes.</div><div id=":159"><br />Compiled by editors Eve Talmadge and Justin Taylor, the reader is treated to a nice range of work, with a handy appendix which gives, when possible, credit to the artists and/or shops where the tattoos were inked.<br /><br />I wondered, when starting the book, if I would see any tattoos that had appeared on Tattoosday. Sure enough, page 117 features a pair of alphabetic ankle tattoos, one of which appeared in this past year's <a href="http://tattooedpoets.blogspot.com/2010/03/index-of-tattooed-poets.html">Tattooed Poet's Project</a>, <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2010/04/tattooed-poets-project-rebecca-wolff.html">here</a>. To counteract that, there are two subjects who declined to participate in the same project.<br /><br />The range of photos and stories is done quite well. We also get a snapshot of <a href="http://ineradicablestain.com/stain.html">Shelley Jackson's Skin Project</a>, and a lovely piece belonging to Katherine Barthelme, accompanied by an apropos story by her father, the late <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Barthelme">Donald Barthelme</a>. The Tattoosday Book Review: Kat Von D's The Tattoo Chronicles

You can say a lot of things about <a href="http://www.katvond.net/">Kat Von D</a>. She is arguably one of the most well-known tattoo artists in the United States, if not the world. This fact, to old school tattoo enthusiasts, is not necessarily a good thing. She is the star of the hit "reality" series, <a href="http://tlc.discovery.com/tv/la-ink/">L.A. Ink</a>, has her own make-up line at <a href="http://www.sephora.com/browse/brand_hierarchy.jhtml?brandId=5905">Sephora</a>, and on October 26, her second book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Tattoo-Chronicles-Kat-Von-D/dp/0061953369?ie=UTF8&tag=bill03-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" target="_blank">The Tattoo Chronicles</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=bill03-20&l=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969&o=1&a=0061953369" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important; padding: 0px ! important;" width="1" />, is being released by <a href="http://www.harpercollins.com/">HarperCollins Design</a>. But whereas her first book shows mostly her public persona, the new effort gives us an inside look at the inner thoughts and feelings of someone who is portrayed very much as a "character" on her television show.<br /><br />It is <i>L.A. Ink</i> that has brought her fame, yet also the scorn and scrutiny of her detractors. The new book lets us peek behind the scenes and, if you didn't realize this already, the Kat Von D you see on the show is not the whole package. Through a diary/journal format, the reader is granted greater access to Kat's true emotions and feelings. We finally get to peek behind the character Kat Von D and meet the person.<br /><br />It was on Page 44 where I first felt the facade truly come down. She talks about getting booed in the shop by "fans" who resent that she won't drop what she's doing to pose for photos for them, and there is the matter of the stalker who freaked everyone out in the shop. Granted, these are consequences nowadays for success of her order, but you certainly believe that such consequences were not anticipated when she headed down the road to fame.<br /><br />It is also fascinating to read Kat's frustration with the onset of another season of <i>L.A. Ink</i>. If you're looking for validation that the only thing real on the show is the tattoos, it's here. I was reminded of <a href="http://bukowski.net/">Charles Bukowski's</a> strong aversion to poetry readings. He despised them, yet they were often necessary as sources of income. The spectacle often outshone the poems. Similarly, <i>L.A. Ink's</i> forced drama often swallows up the tattoos, yet the drama drives ratings, which lets the series continue to showcase tattoos, which is why many of us tune in in the first place.<br /><br />Whereas I found her journal entries fascinating, as I am sure most readers who are fans of the show will as well, there are still pages and pages of photographs featuring her work (drawings, sketches, and of course, tattoos) that are breath-taking in their beauty.<br /><br />Viewers of the show  know that this book has been in the making for a while and it has found its way into plot points as well. Fans will also note that the author's relationship with <a href="http://www.nikkisixx.net/">Nikki Sixx</a>, bassist for <a href="http://www.motley.com/">Mötley Crüe</a>, runs throughout the volume (as it has in the reality series). However, 2010 has been a tumultuous year for the couple, having broken up, and then, quite recently, reportedly gotten back together. All that said, it's very interesting to read about the relationship with a future perspective.<br /><br />Or, it isn't. If you're not interested in Kat's "personal" life, then perhaps you should pass on this book. I can see her detractors poring over the text, looking for evidence that reinforces their negative image of the artist, one that has been honed by the one-dimensional portrayal of her reality show and the tabloids.<br /><br />For fans however, and the followers of Kat Von D's career, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Tattoo-Chronicles-Kat-Von-D/dp/0061953369?ie=UTF8&tag=bill03-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" target="_blank">The Tattoo Chronicles</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=bill03-20&l=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969&o=1&a=0061953369" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important; padding: 0px ! important;" width="1" />, will be a treat, to be savored, an all-access pass to a window of her life, with a stunning visual guidebook to pore over, with evidence enough to back up her on-air claim of being so busy all the time.<br /><br />My one criticism would be that we don't see enough of her tattoos, which is really what she is all about. I mean, sure it's interesting to see a full-page shot of her stuffed albino squirrels, but is it really necessary? I would have rather seen more art that she created, rather than collected.<br /><br />However, in the end, I was delighted with the book. It really adds dimensions to one of the more dynamic celebrities in the tattoo industry. She had just lent her car, a Mustang Bullitt, to Jeff Coleman's octogenarian mother, Sylvia, so she could get married in style at the <i>That's Amore</i> chapel.<br /><br />What I love about Karen Olson's books is that tattoos are seen above and beyond base clues in a murder mystery. She treats the vocation with utter respect, explaining things to the reader as if they were new to a tattoo studio. Tattoos may serve as clues, but they are not regarded as these huge totems that define their owners.<br /><br />Brett Kavanaugh is an enjoyable protagonist, not without faults, and the author let's the reader tag along on her adventures that start off innocently enough, but pull her into deeper and deeper water. It's no surprise that one of the recurring characters is an Emergency Room doctor, as medical attention seems to be needed from time to time, making this mystery series ring truer than one in which the hero (or heroine) dances through their adventure unscathed.<br /><br />Olson's first book in the series was a novelty. A new mystery with tattoos at the center of the narrative. After three volumes, Brett Kavanaugh seems more real, more human, than ever before.<br /><br />A word to the skeptics, those tattoo snobs who may scoff at the light-hearted appearance of these books: Karen Olsen has given a gift to the tattoo community in the form of Brett Kavanaugh. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Driven-Ink-Tattoo-Shop-Mystery/dp/0451231570?ie=UTF8&tag=bill03-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" target="_blank">Driven To Ink</a> is another great mystery, with a respectful and honest portrayal of one artist/sleuth who just happens to be a tattoo shop owner.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>I have enjoyed every one of Ms. Olson's books and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Driven-Ink-Tattoo-Shop-Mystery/dp/0451231570?ie=UTF8&tag=bill03-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" target="_blank">Driven To Ink</a> is yet another chapter in the fascinating life of Brett Kavanaugh. Last year at this time, I had no idea who <a href="http://www.bodytypebook.com/ina/index.html">Ina Saltz</a> was, nor had I ever seen her book <a href="http://www.bodytypebook.com/about/index.html">Body Type</a>, a volume dedicated to typographic tattoos.<br /><br />Then, I met <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2009/09/elizabeths-alphabetical-ink.html">Elizabeth</a>, a typographer who has all twenty-six letters of the English alphabet tattooed on her body in random spots. The day I met her, she was planning on meeting Ms. Saltz to discuss her work. Her lettered ink also reacquainted me with the talents of <a href="http://stephanietamez.com/">Stephanie Tamez</a>, a tattoo artist, who is regarded by many, including Ms. Saltz, as one of the best at inking words, although that's certainly not her only strength as a tattooist.<br /><br />Meeting someone so passionate about typography and ink prompted me to go out and get a copy of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0810970503?ie=UTF8&tag=bodytype-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0810970503">Body Type</a> and I loved it. As you'd imagine, I was thrilled to see <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Body-Type-More-Typographic-Tattoos/dp/0810982765/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b">its sequel</a> in stores recently. And when I was alerted by the <a href="http://www.needlesandsins.com/2010/04/body-type-2-more-typographic-tattoos.html">Needles and Sins blog</a> to Ms. Saltz's upcoming appearance at a Manhattan bookstore, I jumped at the opportunity to go.<br /><br />After a slight detour to the wrong Barnes & Noble (fortunately only 13 blocks away), I found my way to the store's event area and found a seat. I chatted briefly with a student of Ms. Saltz, who wears two Arabic script tattoos on the inside of both wrists. However, I noticed that, as the room filled, the audience appeared (key word <span style="font-style: italic;">appeared</span>) slightly less inked than I would have imagined. I later learned that there were many of the author's colleagues from <a href="http://www1.ccny.cuny.edu/">City College</a> in attendance and that there were also quite a few tattoos tucked away under clothing.<br /><br />Ms. Saltz was introduced and gave a brief twenty-minute presentation. She discussed the book and showed slides of many of the tattoos, and some others, that have appeared in the two books.<br /><br />A Q & A session followed, revealing that many in the audience were not all well-versed in the art of tattoo. She emphasized that possessors of type tattoos tended to all have some level of college education, holding degrees, or even advanced degrees. The individual was battling cancer and had tattooed song lyrics on her forearm in a beautiful script. Ms. Saltz's voice strained with emotion as she recalled how the woman had warmly thanked her for writing the first <a href="http://www.blogger.com/Body%20Type">Body Type</a> book, which gave her strength as she struggled with the disease. The accompanying text from the book delves deeper:<br /><blockquote>“This is from the Lou Reed song, ‘I Believe in Love.’ I love music and I love red. Three months after I got this tattoo I was diagnosed with breast cancer and two months later I found out I have secondary cancer in my bones, which is incurable. I have up to eight years left, so everything in my life has been put into sharper focus. I live life now; that’s my job. Now, looking back, my tattoos seem almost like a premonition, ‘music, music, music, it’ll satisfy your soul . . . ’ is a permanent marker of what is important to me and a reminder to follow my heart’s desires.”</blockquote><div id="caption-copyright" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 78%;">Text and Photo © 2010 Ina Saltz</span></div><div class="clear"></div><br />Such passion, not just for the tattoos, but for the motives that drive people to decorate their skin, appeal to me as someone who appreciates a tattoo much more knowing what has inspired it.<br /><br />After the presentation, the audience lined up and my friend Janet joined me. Janet is an early subject of Tattoosday, and even has a type-ish tattoo (see her post <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2007/09/tattoos-i-know-janets-tat-trick.html">here</a>). A tattooed woman named Izzy in front of us overheard me talking to Janet about Tattoosday and we quickly struck up a discussion.<br /><br />Izzy is working on a fascinating project in which she is hoping to catalog tattoos with the <a href="http://www.loc.gov/index.html">Library of Congress</a>. Fascinating and certainly quite ambitious! One gentleman, smartly attired in a sport coat waved from the back of the room. Ina's face lit up and she identified him as the bearer of the tattoo seen earlier in her slide show, the owner of a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Sexton">Ann Sexton</a> poem, excerpted on his biceps. "See," Ms. Saltz proclaimed, "looking at him, you wouldn't know he had a tattoo, would you?"<br /><br />The crowd murmured its assent.
